Similar comment on BCS as Menachem Ben Yakov's comment on Lloyds TSB. Per Yahoo Finance, BCS has paid dividends of $1.755 and $0.895 during the 12 months preceeding its 8/29/08 close of $25.70. Assuming my data and math are correct, that produces a dividend of 10.31%. Reply

Yields net of tax would be useful for non-US stocks, as tax rates on non-US stocks vary quite substantially. Reply

May I suggest that you include in your screen some consideration of payout ratio dividend growth? Reply

Actually about XOM they do very little research other than to look for oil. Yes they buy back stock. It was pointed out on the radio that the CEO of XOM makes more money than they spend on researching for alternate energy sources. Also the spend more money advertising that they are searching for altenate energy than they spend on alternate energy research. I like the article I am in Candian Royals for my higher yields. Reply

Lloyds TSB pays a 12.91% (TTM) dividend at an ADR/Share price of $22.05.
Many folks err in computing the dividends on U.K. banks because they pay variable dividends. The computer generated stock screens take only a multiple of the last dividend paid and don't compute the yields properly.

I wished that David elaborated more on RBS. I do own some shares and can RBS sustain such a high yield ? What s the main valid reason for such a fall? Why more than it s peers? Thanks David , I always enjoy your articles and it s a nice tool for the people like me that pays attention to dividends.

It is not true that XOM is not on the list because they invest most of the income in growth initiatives. They invest most of the income in stock buybacks. Reply

8 Ways to Profit if OPEC Dumps the Dollar [view article]
It is difficult to overemphasize the role of trust in a debt relationship. All the oil earnings and Japanese savings are on loan to the US; but the US, thanks to losses in the unregulated financial sector, cost of war, and imprudent consumption, cannot afford to pay anything on these loans. Once the lender starts getting negative returns, he'll look elsewhere. The Euro is the first currency that comes to mind, even though the European economies simply cannot absorb the trillions now in US debt paper. Hopefully, a new chapter is being opened from 2009. actually the US treasury debt is reasonably low and manageable (measured in terms of % of annual GDP) compared to other first world countries. What is alarming is the drunken sailor spending of congress and the way they want to pander to voters, buying votes with more spendoing funded by debt to be paid by America's young. The democrat candidate would like to blow the lid off public spending. There is no benefit he won;t promise to get more votes. And the bad news is there is no way he can tax the rich to pay for it. They don;t have enough to fund it. The middle class will continue to get hurt, and will have to pony up higher taxes and get hit with more AMT with fewer deductions and lower future SS & Medicare benefits. Reply

Interesting to review the two viewpoints regarding the direction of the US dollar although supporters of a stronger US dollar going forward were rather shallow with the facts and blind in not considering other components that will lead to a diminishing US dollar . . . . good for AU.

Whether it is losing the status of world currency reserve, ever-increasing US government expenditures & obligations, US government increasing committment towards existing entitlement programs, US Congressional enticement of additional entitlement programs, US government inability to curb fraud/waste/abuse, US Congressional representatives not being held accountable in regards to financial and monetary activities - including the implementation of earmarks, and increasing local/state/federal taxes.

Sooner or later the majority will recognize that gold will have the value to buy freedom and benefit. You can have the digital US dollars backed by the integrity & confidence of the US Congress.
