Medialets has posted the results of a recent Goldman Sachs Global Investment Research report that details the breakdown of the first 1 million iPhone 3Gs sold worldwide.

Earlier this month Apple (AAPL) announced that it had reached the milestone in only three days, compared to 74 days for the original iPhone. Of course, the two figures are hardly comparable, as the the 3G version launched simultaneously worldwide in 21 countries - the original iPhone was exclusive to the US for months after its release.

Unsurprisingly, the report says the United States accounts for 60% of all units sold during the three day period, with a total of 600,000. Trailing by a factor of nearly ten fold is Japan, with 70,000 units sold. Japan’s finish in second place may well be a result of pent up demand, as the original iPhone was never officially sold there (even unlocked phones wouldn’t work, as the original iPhone doesn’t support UMTS).

The results for carrier distribution aren’t particularly surprising, either. AT&T (T) leads by a wide margin because of its US sales. Despite selling the second highest number of phones, Japan’s carrier Softbank (SFBTF.PK) ranks behind T-Mobile and Orange, which both have customers in multiple European countries.

Above all, the figures reflect the explosive demand for the iPhone seen worldwide, and are especially impressive given the difficulties Apple had with activation in a number of countries. In the United States, the iPhone is still selling out at many stores in a manner of minutes. What remains to be seen is how long the public’s obsession with the iPhone will hold, and if Apple can reach its goal of selling 10 million iPhones in 2008.

    ok, one more time...

Apple never said it would sell 10 million in 2008. They said their goal was to sell 10 million BY THE END of 2008! That was in Sep 2006. Get it right will ya...

Don't these journalists even read what they write!? "Of course, the two figures are hardly comparable" he says of the earlier 74-day 1 million mark to the more recent 3-day one because the earlier iPhone "was exclusive to the US for months".

Then, IN THE VERY NEXT SENTENCE he says "the United States accounts for 60% of all units sold during the three day period, with a total of 600,000".

So then, let's compare 1 mil in the US in 74 days against 0.6 mil in the US in THREE DAYS! A little bit of evidence for something, eh? now I'm not claiming this as a continued sale rate, but c'mon, the latter sentence sure undercuts the former, doesn't it!

And of course it "remains to be seen... if Apple can reach its goal of selling 10 million iPhones in 2008"! That's trivially true -- it's August! And that three-day accomplishment make sit very, very likely!

Oh, the pressure of those publishing deadlines...

    longapple:

Apple DID say "in 2008", not "by end of 2008". Google the conference call transcript one or two quarters ago. I got on Kincaid's case for sloppy reporting, but here he's right.

(In either case, it's gonna happen.)

The GS breakdown by country is BS. The number for AT&T in the US was more like 400,000. Transaction time simply wouldn't allow for greater sales velocity, and most AT&T stores sold out in 1.5 hours each day. The European numbers are low.

    @ some_guy & longapple

You are both right (if my feeble old grey cells serve me right).

I definitely recall that the original call was for 10M "by the end of 2008." Later, however, this very definitively was "clarified" as 10M IN 2008.

As for "It remains to be seen..." LOL. If the TechCrunch report is correct, then Apple is shipping about 3.4 M per month. That means they will have 10 M 3G iPhones alone by the end of this quarter!

Care for a lil wager Jason?

    @ some_guy, longapple, & mcmurachu

Mcmurachu is right. And the references are:

    * At MacWorld 2007, when Steve Jobs announced the original iPhone, he claimed the goal was 10 million BY THE END OF calendar year 2008, thus giving Apple approximately a year and a half to make that goal.

    * At the July 2007 conference call, Tim Cook stated that the goal was 10 million IN CALENDAR YEAR 2008.

I have video of Steve's reference and an audio copy of Tim Cook's.

Let's stop blaming the media and each other in this. Apple themselves haven't had a consistent story. I think that everyone has pretty much moved to adopting the latest reference (Tim Cook's regarding calendar year 2008). Even Apple hasn't tried to set that straight. They have consistently assured the media that the goal will be met when asked. (If there was a problem with interpretation, Apple has had plenty of time to rectify it, but hasn't. Instead, they have reiterated.)

Does it even matter? The numbers let you "believe" what you want to believe. JRR Tolkien said we all have our own myths --- which won't change even if the data (facts) change).

Much more interesting is to see what they roll out just before school starts -- most likely a two-finger touch screen iMac, making the mouse optional, and one less item to have to ship with new iMacs.
